The Accommodation Kit – Software for Measuring Accommodation Services
Tourism requires rigorous measurement of its activity in order to boost the credibility of tourism both as and economic sector and as an important factor in development.
The Accommodation Kit Software for Measuring Accommodation Services is aimed at both National Tourism Administrations (NTAs) and accommodation providers, such as hotels. For the former, it provides a convenient tool with which to collect and organise monthly accommodation statistics in a format that enables detailed analysis of the sector. For the latter, it provides an easy way to record guest movements and other data in a format that is preferred by the collecting authorities while providing valuable information for electronically monitoring performance.
The Accommodation Kit tool should be seen as an element of UNWTO support to NTAs in their forging of strategic alliances with the National Statistical Office (NSO) and other key stakeholders towards the development of the national System of Tourism Statistics. It helps streamline and stabilize over time the compilation of official tourism statistics, which are an important input for the elaboration of a Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), and provide crucial information for tourism policy design.
NSOs are normally experienced in works related with statistical infrastructure (such as sample design, database management, etc.), which makes them ideal candidates for implementing such a tool. Nevertheless, in most cases, it is the NTA that is entrusted with the registry and surveillance of data from accommodation establishments, which is the necessary foundation for the information to respond to good practice standards in terms of tourism statistics.
How to obtain the Accommodation Kit
The Accommodation Kit is designed in Excel format and available on CD-ROM.
UNWTO will provide a copy to interested NTAs upon the signing of a licensing agreement and completely free of charge, the only commitment being that the NTA openly disseminate the corresponding statistics within a maximum period of two years.
Contents of the Accommodation Kit
The Accommodation Kit CD-ROM includes the Monthly Accommodation Statistics (MAS) programme, a manual, and an introductory presentation.
The MAS programme runs on Excel and is available in English, French and Spanish.
The manual (also available in English, French and Spanish) is structured in two parts. Part One is a user manual for the accommodation providers, and explains to them how to run the Monthly Accommodation Statistics (MAS) programme. Part Two provides a technical background to accommodation statistics and their collection and analysis, and is aimed principally at the NTA or other relevant compiling authorities.
