Compendium of Tourism Statistics, 2011 Edition

The Compendium of Tourism Statistics is published yearly and contains the main available data and indicators, as supplied by official sources from most countries and territories around the world, for the analysis of the tourism sector.

The 2011 edition of the Compendium of Tourism Statistics has been considerably expanded and its new format features information on inbound, outbound and domestic tourism, tourism industries and employment as well as macroeconomic international tourism related indicators (MITRI). Much more than an update on previous Compendium editions, the new publication responds to countries’ petitions for enlarging the focus of tourism to also domestic tourism, tourism industries and employment, as well as the need for further international comparability on these aspects. Its statistical data and indicators include, but are not restricted to(*):

1. Inbound tourism
    Arrivals of Overnight visitors (i.e.tourists) and Same-day visitors (excursionist)
    Arrivals by geographical region
    Arrivals by main purpose (personal; business and professional)
    Arrivals by mode of transport (air; water; land)
    Accommodation
    Expenditure

2. Domestic tourism
    Trips by Overnight visitors (tourists) and Same-day visitors (excursionist)
    Trips by main purpose
    Trips by mode of transport
    Accommodation
    Average length of stay

3. Outbound tourism
    Departures of Overnight visitors (tourists) and Same-day visitors (excursionist)
    Expenditure

4. Tourism industries
    Number of establishments, by tourism industries
    Accommodation for visitors in hotels and similar establishments
    Occupancy rate (rooms; bed-places)
    Average length of stay
    Available capacity

5. Employment
    Number of employees, by tourism industries
 
6. Complementary (macroeconomic) aggregates
    Gross travel propensity
    Carrying capacity
    Macroeconomic indicators related to international tourism (for more information see MITRI)
         Inbound tourism expenditure over GDP
         Outbound tourism expenditure over GDP
         Inbound tourism over exports
         Outbound tourism over imports

The 2011 Compendium is available in hardcopy and PDF format, with figures for 212 countries and territories around the world for the period 2005-2009. The spreadsheet panel for the years since 1995 is also available on CD-ROM. The Compendium is available in English, with country notes given in English, French and Spanish.

Yearbook of Tourism Statistics, 2011 Edition

In the Yearbook of Tourism Statistics, the arrivals and overnight stays related to inbound tourism are presented by country of origin for 201 countries and territories for 2005-2009. It is available in English, with country notes given in English, French and Spanish.

Data on outbound tourism

Important note: Outbound tourism figures available here are only estimates obtained from the arrivals data supplied by the destination countries and do not necessarily correspond to the actual number of international departures by residents of the country of reference (please see methodological notes).

Data on outbound tourism are now available for the period 2005-2009.
