From global to local: Towards the sub-nationalization of tourism measurement

The International Network on Regional Economics, Mobility and Tourism (INRouTe) is a separate non-profit association dedicated to advancing policy-oriented measurement and analysis of tourism in order to provide guidance to entities involved with regional and local tourism destinations.

This initiative is generating a global source of information and knowledge on what are considered to be key research areas including:

  • flows of visitors;
  • the relationship between tourism and the territory;
  • economic contributions;
  • and the development of indicator systems.

Through what may be considered an innovative scheme, UNWTO and INRouTe are engaged in a collaboration agreement whereby INRouTe provides technical support to UNWTO.

Central to this support is the development of a set of general guidelines for the sub-national adaptation of the 2008 UN recommendations for measuring tourism.

As a result, INRouTe will help UNWTO establish a conceptual framework sufficiently robust for the sub-national measurement, monitoring, and analysis of tourism, so essential for designing policies that properly address today’s challenges and opportunities.

INRouTe represents a collaborative initiative towards better understanding the relationship between tourism and its territorial dimensions, in this way involving us all to:

  • Better understand tourism as an economic sector in the regional economy;
  • Recognize its link with environmental, social and economic sustainability;
  • Appreciate its effects on territorial cohesion;
  • And consider the various governance structures for tourism information and analysis at the sub-national level.
