Project for the Harmonization of the System of Tourism Statistics in the Countries of the Southern Cone
The Project “Harmonization of the System of Tourism Statistics in the Countries of the Southern Cone” ha was carried out by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Araldi, with the technical support of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
In view of the lack of awareness regarding the real impact tourism has on the economies of the region and the possibilities it offers for development, deriving from the scarcity and quality of the available tourism data, a need was seen to carry out such project. Its main objective was to support the consolidation of a virtuous circle between governability and economic development within the scope of the tourism sector, specifically:
Harmonizing the principal instruments of observation and measurement of tourism activity in the region of the Southern Cone;
Promoting the provision of reliable data for planning and the definition of policies to stimulate tourism in these countries.
The project includes technical assistance activities geared towards harmonizing systems of tourism statistics for these countries, while at the same time advancing towards the consolidation of their respective Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) projects. It is hoped that the project will facilitate the improvement of systems of tourism information in a comprehensive manner and under a shared regional vision. The project is structured into six components:
Diagnostic assessment of tourism statistics by country and at the regional level.
